One star only because the bread, I got the caprese half sandwich with a cup of soup. The flavor wasn’t even that great but still it wasn’t bad. The bread was the best part.
$20 including tip for a half sandwich soup combo is a sham in itself. But look at what the so called sándwich they served me looked like. Flat as a pancake, with no substance at all. A tiny little tomato slice? Don’t insult me. Take it off the menu. Never again.
If you’re an employee here and you’re not making at least $25/hr put your two weeks in. You can do better.
I am at Hall Street Bakery at least once per week, and often joke that instead of a Spotify Wrapped at the end of the year, I need a Hall Street Bakery Wrapped.
First things first: the staff here are so kind, some of them know my name and greet me like a friend. They’ve always been happy to correct mistakes if they happen. They are chatty and warm.
The minestrone and roasted red pepper soups are the real MVPs on the hot food menu. The Caprese Grilled Cheese is a close runner up.
Pastry wise: the vegan chocolate chip cookies are amazing, and the bear claws could end wars. Bear claw day is my favorite day of the week!
I do wish there were more vegan options on the menu: I prefer to eat vegan, but in the interest of supporting my neighborhood establishments will flex for some dairy once in a while. They used to let you bring your own vegan cheese to make a pizza, but I don’t think that’s been allowed for a while now, and they never gave you a discount for providing such an expensive ingredient.
I do love their bread selection, and the bread punch cards as gifts!
Their salads are admittedly not great.
A lot of reviews here talk about incorrect orders: this has only ever happened to me when ordering takeout through a third party like DoorDash. When I order from the staff directly, in person or over the phone, I’ve never had an incorrect order! When I’ve ordered from DoorDash for delivery, the order is almost always wrong. I take it as an incentive to cut out the third party and make sure the entire sale goes to the local establishment.
I love that they host local artists in the bakery, by the way. So lovely!
Stephanie at Hall Street Bakery in Grand Rapids was wonderful! She met with us to taste their cakes, frostings, and fillings so we could better decide on the cake flavors and the size we would need. She delivered our cake and placed the final details (flowers) on the cake at the venue. I would recommend Hall Street Bakery for your special event.
Live nearby and used to love this spot. New management recently and it’s gone downhill. I’ve waited no less than 25-30 minutes past the time I’m notified that my order will be ready the last few times I’ve gone and the place was not busy. If placing an order online, I recommend confirming they got it by calling or it will sit without it being accepted for 15+ minutes. If you go, plan to be there a while. I’m hopeful the service will improve again.
Food is delicious, all made from scratch (I love the soup, sandwiches, and pizzas). Great beer and wine selection. All the staff does a great job for the customers. Also, this was my younger sister's first job. So I appreciate the opportunity to get her started in her career here. Thank you! Keep up the good work. It's awesome to have such a nice bakery in the community. We appreciate all of you.
I’ve been to the Hall Street Bakery probably somewhere from 50-70 times. I’ve only ever had two bad experiences.
The pizza, bread, pastries, and scones are all great. Highly recommend!
Nice bakery, they have a lot of freshly baked options for different diets, such as gluten free or vegan. They also have a discounted section, however it is more expensive than other options for lunch. Be prepared to wait for your food. They have a good drink menu and you can also get the drinks specific to your diet needs.
New owners but the same ambiance. They have a variety of pastries, cakes and breads to choose from. And a full-service coffee bar. Nice seating inside and outside. The outside seating in particular nice since it’s not right on the curb of a busy road and has some shady seating usually. My go to here is a dark roast coffee and one of their great scones. My buddy does a pastry. On my last visit I had a non-sweet treat, a focaccia roll with a little butter. Fewer calories and a nice treat.
